February 27 – March 1, 2018

Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of the Tourette Association of America’s Youth Ambassador Program! The Training for teens 12-17 and their parent/adult guardian will take place on February 27-March 1, 2018 in Arlington, VA.

Training Details

YA Training Schedule:

Tuesday, February 27, 2018—Arrival Day

YA teams will arrive & check in at the Renaissance Capital View Hotel.  That evening, there is registration and an informal (and optional) Meet & Greet for both Youth Ambassadors and parents.

Wednesday, February 28, 2018—Youth Ambassador Training

For parents, training begins at 7:30am for the session “How to do an In-Service: Presenting to Schools”.  YA Training starts at 9:00am and runs the full day (with breaks) until 5:00pm. YA teams will also participate in National Advocacy Day Preparation Dinner.

Thursday, March 1, 2018—National Advocacy Day

YA teams will meet with Members of Congress and their staffs.

Costs associated with the Youth Ambassador Training are listed below.

TAA Funded Teams

Costs covered by the Tourette Association:

Hotel accommodations for the night of Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28 for the YA team (additional nights at the team’s personal expense).

  • Training-sponsored meals for YA team.
  • Training program materials.
  • Transportation (e.g. airfare, train ticket, mileage reimbursement, parking) up to $350 for Youth Ambassador. Parent/guardian transportation will not be covered. Your travel will be reimbursed by the Tourette Association. Please note, travel reimbursement expenses will be capped at $350.00. However, we recognize that there might need to be some exceptions, in which case prior approval will need to obtained from Sonja Mason-Vidal (VP of Finance).

Funded Teams

At attendee’s own expense (Costs NOT covered by the Tourette Association):

  • Hotel charges for any nights that are part of an extended stay.

Chapter / Self-Funded Teams*: Please follow-up with your Chapter to discuss the details & expenses.

  • Hotel accommodations for the night of Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28 for the YA team (additional nights at the team’s personal expense).
  • Transportation.
  • Training Fee of $400 per person, which covers training food & beverage, program materials, and National Advocacy Day bus transportation.

  • Please complete and sign this application, and don’t forget to have your parent/guardian sign as well. Application must be completed by the Youth Ambassador applicant.
  • Please note: If you are chosen to become a YA, this will be displayed publically.
  • My Story

    Tell us your story and why you think you would be a responsible Tourette Association Youth Ambassador. You might want to mention the following points:
    • -Tell us about your family.
    • - Do you or someone you know have a diagnosis of TS?
    • - What experiences have you had with other people’s reactions to TS?
    • - Why do you think you would be an effective Youth Ambassador?
    • - Your plans for when you are older.
    • - How you see yourself as a public speaker.
    • - The school age-range you feel most comfortable addressing.
  • For Parent/Guardian:

  • I have read the “Youth Ambassador Requirements” and am aware that my child is applying to be trained as a Tourette Association Youth Ambassador.
  • If this application is accepted for attending the Youth Ambassador Training as an Additional Team rather than the Funded Team (please see Youth Ambassador Training Information Sheet), I understand that we will be responsible for all costs of the Training, including Training fees, travel, lodging and incidentals, and other program costs and materials.
  • Media Participation Release
    I hereby irrevocably grant to the Tourette Association of America and to its employees, agents, and assigns, the right to photograph and/or video record and use pictures, silhouettes, videos and other reproductions of me and/or my children’s physical likeness (including potentially televised both locally and nationally) for educational, informational, promotional, charitable and fundraising activities for the Tourette Association and its Chapters and Support Groups and inclusion on, but not limited to the Tourette Association’s website, YouTube Channel and all other social media sites. I hereby certify and represent that I have read the foregoing and fully understand the meaning and effect thereof and, intending to be legally bound, I have hereunto set my hand.
  • I have read the application in its entirety and understand the time commitment to prepare and train for the Youth Ambassador Training & Program.
